The Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize The Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize, established in 2002, is a biennial prize honoring the creative process, Creativity in Motion. This prize celebrates a visionary creative work in process, recognizing the power of original thought and expression in possibly enriching the world around us. The work or project must be under way at the time of application. This prize is open to all fields of creativity, including, but not limited to, the arts, cultural affairs, education and science. The award of $40,000 is available to U.S. citizens and can be used in any way the recipient chooses. June 2, 2009 - Fourth Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize awarded to poet David Mason, Colorado Springs, Colorado The recipient of the 2009 Creativity in Motion Prize was announced in June. Colorado College Professor of English David Mason is the recipient. He will be recognized at a ceremony planned for September 2009. The $40,000 will allow Mason to focus more time on creating the libretto for the opera adaptation of his verse novel Ludlow. Mason previously teamed with composer Lori Laitman for the 2008 opera Scarlet Letter, her first full-length opera. This will be their second project together. September 5, 2007 - Third Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize awarded to Philip Solomon, Colorado Springs, Colorado The 2007 Creativity in Motion Prize was presented to Philip P. Solomon, filmmaker and professor of film studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder at a ceremony on Sept. 5 at the University of Oklahoma. A dinner was held in Solomon's honor, followed by a public presentation titled, "The Business of Creativity," featuring members of World's Fair, a music management company, and the founders of DFest. A screening of "UFOs at the Zoo," a concert film by the Flaming Lips, followed the discussion.
